Farm Vredelus is situated in the heart of the Kalahari desert of Namibia. Red sand dunes, extreme heat and very little rain are the perfect, natural conditions for our range of medical plants. We specialize in rare desert plants with well known medicinal, healing properties, which can survive and thrive in this harsh and unforgiving climate.
We let nature take it’s course, grow all plants organically under natural conditions and produce herb medicine that has all the healing powers of wild plants.

sceletium tortuosum (Kanna, Kougoed)
Sceletium tortuosum is a succulent ground cover with fleshy leaves and a bright green color and it is at home in the dry, arid regions of Southern Africa. The San Bushmen have used this plant for centuries as a powerful mood enhancer that gives a sense of calmness and happiness as well as reducing cravings (drug addiction) and withdrawal symptoms. Depression and anxiety are eased considerably, and no adverse effects like drowsiness or impaired reactions have been reported. A group of alkaloids, especially mesembrine, are the active ingredients in Sceletium tortuosum. As scientific research continues, Sceletium tortuosum could become the herbal alternative for the treatment of depression, anxiety disorders and addiction.
It can be used in many different forms. Originally it was chewed and/or smoked, today it is available as capsules and tincture (drops) for easier use. We sell our raw material unfermented, dried in pieces - or fermented, dried in pieces. On special request we can deliver whole plants or powder as well.

hoodia gordonii
Hoodia gordonii is a cactus like, thorny succulent that grows mainly in Southern Namibia and South Africa. Hoodia gordonii has also been used for centuries by the San and Nama people as a high energy source and appetite suppressant on their long hunting trips where food and water were scarce.
Over the last decade, the beneficial properties of Hoodia have been studied by scientists. They have traced the appetite suppressing effects to the so called P 57 compounds contained in the plant. These compounds interact with the brain’s pituitary gland blood sugar (glucose ) monitoring system. When blood glucose levels drop, the brain signals that you are hungry. This process is reversed with the intake of food. Since the P 57 compounds are 10000 times more active than glucose in the pituitary gland, a small intake of Hoodia can produce the same satiated (full ) feeling as a large meal. Hoodia gordonii can therefore significantly reduce the intake of food.
